Land Clearing and Site Preparation
Dirt Work

What Is Dirt Work?
If you are planning to build your dream house, a barn, or a shed, the first step to take is to prepare the site where the building is going to sit. Your house could be needing a customized gravel driveway for your home’s curb appeal. Maybe your business has grown, and you are planning to install a new parking lot for your clients. Or you are having drainage problems in your property and want to install a detention or retention pond in your land. These are examples of dirt work projects.
Dirt work is the act or process of moving dirt to prepare the site for a new construction. It is digging, grading, leveling, and controlling erosion on the site.
Digging is done to remove trees, stumps, logs, rocks, and other obstacles that will interfere with the new construction. After all the obstacles have been removed, the site is graded.
Grading is the process of removing or adding dirt to level the ground to a flat grade. The top layer is smoothed to avoid leaving bumps or holes to prevent erosion problems in the future.
Erosion control and drainage prevention is the creation of drainage channels when the land is graded to prevent water build-up and to convey runoff safely during large storms without causing erosion.
Applications of dirt work
Dirt work is applied to different construction projects, not only for structures, which include:
- Installation of a house pad, mobile home pad, and a waterproofing basement.
- Installation of roadways, bridges, parks, and parking lots.
- Installation of driveways, sidewalks, and patios.
- Installation of reservoirs, lakes, and detention and retention ponds.
- Installation of swimming pools and much more.
Dirt work involves bringing dirt in or taking dirt out. Large amounts of dirt will be hauled in to fill areas that need to be leveled and graded. However, there are other times in which there is more dirt than needed and the remaining dirt will be hauled away. It also includes cut and fill. That means dirt from a high spot will be removed to fill in a low spot.
Dirt work is not just digging and moving dirt to different areas, it also includes site preparation, trenching, demolition, hauling, culvert installation and other tasks related to pre-construction projects.
